Oral Traditions began as a social recipe sharing project, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It has since evolved into a community cookbook that explores the Asian diaspora past, present, and future through food. We celebrate our many flavors and stories through the art of cooking⏤especially lesser-known dishes, techniques, and ingredients.
If you make any of our recipes at home, please tag us @happyfamilymkt on social media. We’d love to see how you enjoyed the dishes and riffed on them to make them your own. You can also join our Recipe Testing Club to help us test and document new recipes as they come in!

We cover Asian foodways: the intersection of Asian and Pacific Islander food with culture, traditions, and history.
We invite home cooks, artists, writers, and chefs to contribute to our program.
We’re looking for recipes that are meaningful to you, that play a role in your community rituals, social events, or family ties. We want recipes you cook regularly, whether it’s once every few years or once a week. We’d love to learn about meals you make from memory, and are happy to help you translate them into a recipe. And we’d be honored to be entrusted with a dish cooked by your elders or family members, if you are able to serve as the intermediary.
All recipes include a video to accompany the social media post. The video can be a cooking demonstration, an exploration of a recipe’s history, or a Q&A about technique or specialty ingredients.
Our contributors are not, at the moment, compensated. While we hope to grow into a publication that pays contributors equitably, we’re currently on a very limited budget. In the meantime, we will promote recipes on our channels and support and celebrate all contributors as part of our community!
